Website Redesign Services: What They Include, What They Cost and How to Protect Your SEO

Microchip on a printed circuit board

Website redesign services rebuild a site's design, structure and performance while keeping the pages and search rankings that already work. A good redesign includes an audit, a new layout, a plan that redirects every changed URL, and a launch that Google can follow. Done badly, it is the most common way a business loses its search traffic.

What website redesign services include

Scope varies by provider, so ask for it in writing. A complete redesign normally covers these parts:

  • Audit. A record of which pages rank, which convert and which are slow or broken, so the team knows what to keep.
  • Information architecture. The page structure and navigation, including a map from every old URL to its new home.
  • Design and build. New layouts, templates and components, usually built on a staging site you can review.
  • Content. Either carried across as it is, or rewritten where the audit shows it is weak or out of date.
  • Technical SEO. Titles, headings, internal links, structured data, redirects and a fresh sitemap.
  • Launch and monitoring. Go-live checks, then watching Search Console for crawl errors and drops.

If a quote lists only "design" and "development", the SEO work in the middle three items is probably missing.

Redesign, refresh or rebuild?

The three words are used loosely, but the difference decides the price and the risk.

  • Refresh. New colours, fonts and imagery on the same templates. URLs do not change, so ranking risk is low.
  • Redesign. New layouts and templates, often with a new navigation. Some URLs may change.
  • Rebuild or replatform. A new codebase or a new platform, for example moving from Wix or a page builder to WordPress. URLs, markup and speed all change, so this carries the most risk and the most upside.

Signs it is time to redesign

Redesign for a measurable reason, not because the site feels dated. Good reasons include:

  • Pages fail Google's Core Web Vitals. The "good" thresholds are a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less, an Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less and a Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of page loads, according to web.dev.
  • The site breaks or looks wrong on phones.
  • Editors cannot update content without a developer.
  • The site gets visits but few enquiries, which points to a message or layout problem.
  • The platform is unsupported or depends on plugins that are no longer maintained.

How much do website redesign services cost?

Price depends on page count, custom functionality and content volume more than on design. Our own redesigns start at $5,000 for a small site of up to eight core pages, and most business sites land between $5,000 and $25,000. Enterprise sites with multisite networks or integrations cost more. These are our price ranges, not a market average, so compare any quote on what it includes: the redirect plan and performance testing are the items cheap quotes usually leave out.

For a breakdown by project type, see our WordPress pricing page.

How long does a redesign take?

A standard business site takes four to eight weeks from signed proposal to launch. Sites with heavy content migration, a WooCommerce store or custom integrations take longer. The biggest source of delay is usually content: pages that are not written or approved on time.

How to protect your SEO during a redesign

Rankings are lost in a redesign for predictable reasons: URLs change without redirects, content that ranked is deleted, or the new site is slower. Google's guidance on moving a site with URL changes sets out the safeguards:

  1. Map every old URL to a new one. Use server-side permanent redirects (301 or 308) from each old URL to its direct counterpart. Do not send many old pages to an unrelated page such as the homepage.
  2. Keep redirect chains short. Google advises no more than three hops, and each old URL should point straight to its final destination.
  3. Submit a new sitemap. List the new URLs in Search Console, and keep the old sitemap for monitoring.
  4. Keep the redirects for at least a year. Google says this is the minimum for signals to transfer to the new URLs.
  5. Update internal links. Point links at the new URLs directly rather than relying on the redirects.
  6. Expect fluctuation. Google says small to medium sites may take a few weeks for most pages to move, and visibility can fluctuate meanwhile.

Beyond redirects, keep the content that already ranks, carry across titles, headings and structured data, and test the new templates for speed before launch, not after.

How to choose a redesign provider

  • Ask who handles redirects and what the plan looks like. A vague answer is a warning.
  • Ask to see a staging site early, not only a design mockup at the end.
  • Ask what happens to your content and URLs, and who owns the code afterwards.
  • Ask for a fixed price and a launch date in writing.
  • Check that the team ships performance results, not only visual design.

Frequently asked questions

Will a redesign hurt my Google rankings?

It can, but it does not have to. Rankings fall when URLs change without redirects, ranking content is removed or the new site is slower. With a full redirect map, preserved content and a performance check before launch, most sites see a temporary fluctuation and then recover.

Do I need a new design or just a faster site?

If the design converts and the pages are only slow, performance work may be enough. Check your Core Web Vitals first. If layout, navigation or editing are the problem too, redesign.

Can I redesign without changing my URLs?

Often yes. Keeping URLs the same removes the largest SEO risk, and it is a sensible goal for any redesign that is mainly visual.
